How long does a POPLA appeal take?
Not legal advice. Timescales can change — check POPLA FAQs for the current process. Claim Helper does not represent you. Outcomes are not guaranteed. Citizens Advice: 0808 223 1133.
Short answer: POPLA states the appeal process typically takes about 6 to 8 weeks from submission to decision. You normally must submit within 28 days of the operator’s rejection, with a 10-digit verification code.
Official process (high level)
According to POPLA’s FAQs:
- Submit the appeal with the verification code and all evidence you want considered.
- The operator has 21 days to provide an evidence pack.
- You then have 7 days to comment on that pack (new grounds/evidence are generally not allowed later).
- An assessor decides; both parties are notified.
POPLA’s own FAQ answer: the process typically takes between 6 to 8 weeks.
What to do while you wait
- Do not assume any early-payment discount is still open — see Will appealing lose my discount?.
- Keep the rejection letter and POPLA reference.
- Confirm whether enforcement should pause during a valid second-stage appeal under the Code of Practice (Clause 8.3) and your notices.
IAS is different
If the operator is IPC, use the IAS, not POPLA (GOV.UK). Do not mix the two.
